yeah I was thinking of just getting a piece of felt cut and putting it across the back

That's not what I meant.  The corals that grow over your rock will add the visual stimulus.  Your tank is new and over time it will fill up as the corals grow.  A big part of the enjoyment I get out of my tank is watching the corals compete for space and then slowly the rock disappears.

If you can reach the back with a roller you can use paint. Black is popular, but blue can also look nice.
